Using gloves while feeeding infants

I'm looking for clarification regarding the use of gloves and bottle feeding an infant. The school is currently required to wear gloves only when the bottle contains breast milk. Upon a quick review of the "All About the ITERS-R" with the director, we were unable to find out if gloves must be worn at all times for bottle feeding, only with breast milk, or not required if hands are washed prior to feeding. Please inidcate where this is speciffically addressed so it can be shared with the school's corporate office. Thanks.

  1. There is nothing in the "ITERS-R" or "All About the ITERS-R" that requires gloves be worn when feeding children. However, hands must be washed before preparing food or bottles and before and after feeding children. Please note that as stated on page 81 in the "All About ITERS-R", "using gloves, wipes, or antiseptic waterless washes does not count as a substitute for handwashing." If staff feel more comfortable wearing gloves when feeding infants breast milk, it is acceptable to do so, but remind them that their hands must still be washed.

  2. Thank you for the information. It is always helpful when a page number is given. Especially since we have some many different standards to keep track of, from the ERS to different accreditation programs.
