Legos in Block Area

Can legos be located in the block area? I understand that they fall under the fine motor subscale item and that is where they would be counted. Many students create cars, boats, and planes with the duplos/legos to use with the large block structures that they create.

  1. Materials other than blocks (building manips., dramatic play like tool boxes or little play houses etc.) CAN be stored in the Block Area, as long as they do not INTERFERE WITH block play. However, if children have to go into the block area to access materials other than "stand alone" blocks, and possibly knock over or interfere with block play, this would be a problem.

If I observe children using other materials to ENHANCE their block play, then all materials are fine. However, I typically see Legos and little play houses being used where the blocks are stored, and NO constructive block play is taking place. Then I do not consider the block area "special and out of traffic."
